Star Trek Online is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed and published by Cryptic, based on the highly popular Star Trek Universe players can expect to visit iconic locations from the franchise such as Starfleet Academy, Deep Space Nine and many more. The game boasts a number of fresh features for the MMORPG market and has just recently launched a free to play version with minimal restrictions.

The game is the first MMORPG to feature both space and ground combat at launch, other MMO titles have achieved this feat but not for many months after the initial release. Players take on the role of ships Captain and are able to customize their characters appearance, gender and race, players are also able to create their very own race if they wish to do so. Although every character is a Captain of a ship, this does not force you into any role as you're able to select from a wide variety such as Engineer, Tactical Officer, Doctor, Science Officer etc.

Ground missions work in a similar way to your typical MMORPG, you're given a quest to go to X location and perform X task. As each planet is totally unique players can be traversing dangerous mountainous regions one minute and then exploring the tropics of a jungle the next. This adds for a lot of variety, even in the standard kill X amount quests, making it a much smoother progression route than most other MMORPG titles.

Players are able to buy and fully customize their own ship, changing everything from the staff on your bridge to the shape and design of your ship. Once you feel ready you can enter fully real-time space combat. During space combat players can utilize many strategies, tactics and weapons to help overcome opponents. The fabled Photon Torpedo's make an obvious appearance, as do many of the iconic Star Trek weapons and technologies, such as Phaser's, teleportation and the Holodeck.
