Runes of Magic is a free to play fantasy MMORPG developed by Runewalker Entertainment and published by Frogster Interactive. The game was launched on 19^th of March, 2009 and the content of the first package is referred to as Chapter I: The Rise of the Demon Lord. Three new major patches or Chapters have been applied since: The Elven Prophecy, The Elder Kingdoms and The Lands of Despair, the last currently being in a closed beta stage.

There are eight classes available in Runes of Magic and with the dual class system players can carry certain skills from one class to another when switching between them. With two playable races available and keeping track of the race/class restrictions, there are 24 possible class combinations.

Knight – the closest class to the tank archetype. Knights are the only classes that can wear plate armor and most of their skills are focused on keeping agro and deflecting enemy damage. This is a human only class.

Warrior – a highly versatile melee class, the warrior can wear almost any type of armor and wield all kinds of weapons. The warrior mechanics are based on rage which he expends in order to empower his strikes or increase his resilience.

Rogue – an agile and subtle close quarters specialist that can inflict significant physical damage is left unchecked. Their skills are neighboring assassination techniques.

Scout – heavily relying on bows and crossbows, scouts are masters of ranged combat. However, their long range superiority is balanced by their melee ineffectiveness.

Priest – heavily based on the healer archetype, the priest heavily relies on restorative skills: they can mend wounds and bring fallen allies back to life. This is a human only class.

Druid – being a hybrid class, the druids can provide healing support, but also use their Nature’s Power skills to inflict damage. This is an elven only class.

Mage – having the ability to inflict tremendous damage on single targets and multiple targets alike, the mage is a powerful dps class. However, their skills can also provide protection for themselves or their allies.

Warden – being able to use a wide variety of weapons, chainmail armor, and numerous magical skills and having three faithful companions, the warden can emerge victorious from almost every fight. The warden is a master of crowd control. This is an elven only class.

Runes of Magic was often compared with World of Warcraft and many time even accused of simply ripping off its predecessor. Still the game proposed several unique features which many praised.
