External Pressure Applied To Transformers Universe Developers
Jagex may have recently reported record profits in 2013 but it's not all butterflies and roses for the developers of the free browser MMO, Runescape. Hasbro and Jagex have been working closely in recent months to develop the highly anticipated Transformers Universe, the first title in the Transformers IP that will feature truly free MMO game mechanics.
However, a recent press release detailed that Jagex would halt development of a proprietary engine, resulting in 13 employees losing their job. Rumors are stating that these cuts are due to external pressures from Hasbro as they "encourage" to release the game before the end of the year.
"We have always been committed to developing the highest quality games and services and are confident that this reduction will not adversely impact the game. "The vast majority of the Transformers studio will be unaffected by this move. On a positive note a significant portion of the talent potentially effected have already been reallocated to support the upcoming release of RuneScape 3 in HTML 5 and the RuneScape 3 on tablets project slated for the end of the year. Regrettably we have not been able to find suitable roles for 13 members of the team who will be leaving the studio later this month. "We will be revealing more details about the game on www.transformersuniverse.com shortly."
Do you think its fair for publishers to lay extra pressure on developers? Especially one as experienced as Jagex. Leave a comment below.
