War of Legends is a free-to-play strategy MMORPG, centered on building and commanding a kingdom. The game was developed by Ultizen and published by Jagex Games Studio. The game was released on 19^th of January 2010. War of Legends incorporates a mixture of 3D isometric perspective and 2D content.

War of Legends’ backstory sets the action in China and adds some general Asian mythology in the mix. The game does a poor job at looking unique or at least different because it is similar to other strategy games released in late 2009 and early 2010. The game is played in real-time and gameplay focuses on controlling and running a kingdom rather than the evolution of a single character. There are only four types of troops that can be controlled:

Halberdier – The basic combat troop. Training is fast and they can be grouped in large numbers. They have a small bonus against Charioteers.

Swordsmen – More expensive than the Halberdiers, but with a bonus at armor. They are useful against archers.

Archers – Very effective against Halberdiers, but cost a lot of food and wood. This troop strikes before other unit types.

Charioteers – They are the strongest units in game, but they are slow to train and only a small amount of charioteers can be led by a Legend. They do extensive damage against Swordsmen.

Altogether, the game isn’t spectacular, providing no “out-of-the-ordinary” concepts and looking pretty much the same as other games of this type. However, Jagex have an incredible amount of experience in the MMO industry after the huge success of their browser-based MMORPG, Runescape. Runescape has since gone on to break a number of records and recently released a total overhaul to the games combat system, The Evolution of Combat.

Although War of Legends may not break the bank in terms of innovative features, players can expect regular updates and continued support from Jagex.
