Pirate101 is an upcoming free to play MMORPG from KingsIsle, the same development team behind the innovative MMO, Wizard101. Players can create a character and choose one of five unique character classes. The currently available classes are Buccaneer, Musketeer, Privateer, Swashbuckler and Witchdoctor. Each class can be linked with regular MMORPG archetypes and in true MMORPG fashion, players can unlock more powerful and devastating abilities by earning experience points and increasing their level.

Similar to Wizard101, KingsIsle are leading the MMO genre into the next generation with yet another highly innovative combat system. Anyone familiar with Wizard101 will tell you how fresh the combat system was, featuring highly detailed animations and great depth of tactics and strategy, and Pirate101 will provide much of the same. The combat works in phases, with the initial phase consisting of planning and movement. You're given a birds-eye-view of the game grid, with images to represent each character on the battlefield. You can then select which skills, abilities and maneuvers you and your characters perform on the next turn. There's a large variety of skills including single-target abilities, area of effect skills and heals. Once you've completed the planning phase the game switches to a fully 3D combat engine where you can watch your previous decisions come to life in gloriously detailed graphics and high-quality animations.

Fighting alone is fun, but fighting with a group of companions is even better. Pirate101 features a large selection of companions that you can discover on your travels. You can then get these companions to join you on your journey. Each companion has a different selection of skills, abilities and perks, but all can be controlled by the players during the battles.
