Florensia is a free-to-play MMORPG of Japanese origins, introduced to the western market by Burda:ic GmbH. The game explores a relatively new concept for the MMOG genre by allowing players to venture out on both sea and land. While this doesn’t actually count as a breakthrough of historical importance, it does point towards untapped fun resources in fantasy online games, and Florensia and its developers should be congratulated for making steps in this direction. There are twelve character classes to choose from and complex skill trees to sink points into, thus allowing players to work towards controlling rather unique characters. Since the skill trees for land and sea are completely separated, reaching the maximum potential of your characters means tackling two completely different game modes that most of the time don’t go hand in hand. There is a clear difference in quality between the two game sections, one that is extremely hard to overlook. The basic ship controls are counterintuitive, slow and sometimes even unresponsive, which makes the whole sea exploration section of the game frustrating and counter-immersive. With a level-up system based heavily on grinding, being forced to go through a game section that simply does not deliver takes the fun out of the entire experience. The game is wrapped nicely in a child friendly cartoonish style, from the monsters you have to fight to the environments that make up the Florensia universe. Every visual element present in Florensia is top notch within the confinements of the proposed art direction. The game design however doesn’t rise up to the challenge and while many features do come with a twist, they aren’t enough to keep veterans of the genre interested for a long enough period of time.
