There's a constant battle between the MMO gaming genres but one that constantly appears near the top of the chart is the MMOFPS genre. MMOFPS games have been popular since the conception of competitive gaming. Pitting player against player in skill-based combat to the death. We're lucky enough to have a ton of choices in today's MMO industry but is it more filler than killer? What are the best MMOFPS games out at the moment?
One of the most unique FPS titles currently on the MMO market is Renaissance Heroes. Unlike the traditional FPS game that follows futuristic war-time themes and settings, Renaissance Heroes takes place in a 16th century background. It's a free-to-play MMOFPS title that hosts a variety of maps, game modes and weapons, all of which you'd expect from any FPS game. Another stand-out area of Renaissance Heroes are the maps. They're based on famous historical locations but with a fantasy twist. Players can battle it out in Leonardo da Vinci's workshops and the Sultan's palace in Constantinople, both quite a leap from your typical Call of Duty maps.
Another extremely popular online shooting game is Ghost Recon Online. This is one of the very few MMO games that supports team play and communication, over that of simple run-and-gun mechanics. Players are rewarded for targeting enemies, healing allied players and relaying advice and information to the squad. There's also an exciting variety of abilities available that can aid your team, such as the ability to see enemies through walls or behind objects.
The best feature in Ghost Recon Online is without a doubt the cover system. No more stupidly mundane fight scenes that finish in 3 seconds, Ghost Recon Online has the features and community for gun fights to last several minutes at a time.
For me, there is no debate. There is one MMOFPS game that stands head and shoulders above all competition, PlanetSide 2. A sequel to the original, and very popular, PlanetSide game, Sony Online Entertainment looked to raise the bar with their latest MMO release, and they did not disappoint.
Featuring massive game worlds that can support thousands of players, vehicular and aerial combat, and in-depth squad-based mechanics, PlanetSide 2 includes every great feature from a plethora of FPS titles and bundles them up into one awesome MMOFPS package.
