The Repopulation Faces Extinction Level Event
Above and Beyond Technologies, developers of the upcoming and highly anticipated sandbox MMO The Repopulation, today issued a statement to their community amidst concerns of the games future following news that the Hero Engine could be traveling towards its final days. The developers of the Hero Engine, Idea Fabrik, are currently suffering from severe financial issues, which could in turn see some lengthy downtime for The Repopulation and its community. The exact details surrounding any potential downtime are unclear as the issues plaguing Idea Fabrik could still be resolved. Suffering from engine problems with the Hero Engine could see The Repopulation be rebuilt from the ground up in an entirely new engine, as mentioned by the developers in the statement issued today.Unfortunately at the time when we started out here the only viable options were Hero, Bigworld, or Torque 3D, with the first of those two having restrictive license agreements, and the third being a good renderering engine that lacked in MMO specific features. We weren't ever to fully be able to get out of the agreement. The risk of downtime is very real at this point, though there is still also some reason for hope that this will resolve itself in a positive way. We have already begun some early work on the most likely contingency plan, so that we aren't just sitting idly. But we are limited still in what we can do as a result of being in money preservation mode while this plays out, so currently it's mostly prep work and experimentation. We'll keep you posted of any developments in coming weeks.
