Travian was developed and published by Travian Games. The first version of the game was released on September 4, 2004 and the third version on June 30 2006.

Travian is a browser based strategy MMO that allows players to control one of the three tribes featured in game: Romans, Gauls and Teutons. The goal of the game is to form alliances and rage war with other players in the race to construct a Wonder. Cunning diplomacy and intense planning can ensure the victory of a player over the AI controlled tribe of Natars. Each tribe has its own specific attributes, bonuses and unique units. Players must choose wisely their tribe to better fit their own gameplay style:

The Romans – The easiest tribe to play, mostly chosen by beginners for its balanced defense and attack capabilities. They are weak against cavalry.

The Gauls – This tribe is mostly based on defensive traits. They have strong cavalry units.

The Teutons – Teuton tribes have a low defense and speed, but they inflict considerable damage to their opponents.

Unlike most browser games Travian actually has an end-game purpose. For about 300 days (approximately 100 days on speed servers) the tribes are attacked by the Natars, an AI controlled tribe. The players must steal the blue prints from the Natars, construct a Wonder and ensure its defense as it upgrades to level 100. Doing this requires loads of resources, a strong army, a lot of patience and team work. Many players choose invest money into the game and buy premium bonuses in order to gain advantages over other players. Many argue that this greatly unbalances the game.

In spite of outdated graphics and somewhat unbalanced gameplay between free players and premium players, Travian makes for a decent and enjoyable game.
