The Taken King Has Restored My Interest In Destiny
Bungie released the highly anticipated The Taken King expansion for Destiny yesterday, the most anticipated update in the games award-winning history. However, having suffered criticism for repetitive mechanics, grind heavy gameplay and lack of story content since its launch last year, has The Taken King delivered on the many expectations of the community? Let me prefix by explaining my background with Destiny. I'm not your typical Destiny player. I picked the game up at launch last year and played it solid for a good few weeks. I enjoyed the game but felt the end-game to be terribly lackluster and the progression mechanics, such as Light Level, were shallow and meaningless. This meant I lost interest very quickly. I also avoided grabbing the follow two DLC's as I heard they were expensive for the content they offered and didn't feel they introduced enough new content to make it worthwhile. So with The Taken King just a few days away I took the plunge and decided to purchase The Dark Below and The House of Wolves, alongside The Taken King expansion. Thankfully I can say I didn't waste a single dime. The story, albeit somewhat short, was far more immersive than the previous DLC's and even the main Destiny game and the added voice talent from folks like Nathan Fillion really added to the quality of the whole experience. I was a little detached at first as I wasn't as emotionally invested in some of the older characters as some veteran Destiny players may have been, but the main story in The Taken King was still a fantastic experience. This however is the same point I fell out with the original Destiny. Had Bungie bothered with enough additional content to make the gear grind more varied and worthwhile? Hell yes. Having put 10+ hours in every day since the launch of The Taken King I still find myself with mysteries to solve and tasks to complete. Various chests with secret techniques to unlocking their contents, random enemy encounters across the many worlds of Destiny and the dynamic changes to the Strikes and other playlists have left me with more than enough to do. Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect. The loading is still a pain, PvP balance is even crazier than before with the new sub-classes and my Titan still feels powerless when compared to other classes abilities in battle. For the money however The Taken King was worth every buck. If you're questioning your return to Destiny or the investment in The Taken King expansion, from a Destiny casual, take the plunge.Leave a comment
