MMO Halloween Events Suck
If I was more intelligent I’m sure I could have created a slightly more appealing title but nothing else summed up my opinion more than simply saying Halloween events in MMO games totally suck. Now, before you throw me to the wolves I’d like to explain that I’m not a Grinch. I don’t hate all things happy, I don’t dislike the holiday seasons and I’m actually quite fond of getting creative at Halloween, but that’s in real-life.
Throwing Halloween into MMO games is nothing more than a poor attempt at dragging in numbers. It’s basic business; the more engaged your customers are, the more cash you make. That goes throughout most industries and works the same in online gaming. Whether you’re sinking money into a free-to-play item mall, or you’re subscribing on a monthly basis, it’s all money to them. So what’s my big problem?
Can someone please explain to me how a fantasy world created from imagination just so happens to celebrate an identical holiday to that of our world? How does a world filled with flora and fauna more at home on Mars than Earth still celebrate an event with pumpkins, scary things and candy? How does a world where a tomato can end your life still find amusement in skeletons playing tricks on unsuspected passers-by?
Not all MMO’s are guilty of this crime. I consider there to be 3 types of developers/publishers when it comes to seasonal events. You have the totally unimaginative ones that call their events Christmas and Halloween and feature pumpkins, big trees and a jolly fat guy wearing red. Then you have the slightly more creative, but equally as lazy, developers that conjure a creative name up for an almost identical event such a Kwismas (yes this is real). Lastly you have the developers that do it properly, well almost.
They create unique events that correspond with in-game lore and background, and actually offer players a new incite into the world they love. Sure it shares some similarities, such as dates, but at least the developers put the effort in to create an event based around the world they’ve created, not the one they live in.
What do you think? Do you flock to your MMO of choice whenever an event is announced?
