Microsoft Rumored To Be Acquiring Mojang For $2 Billion
A new rumor has surfaced that suggests corporate giant Microsoft has been making moves to pick up the indie development studio Mojang, the team behind the Minecraft phenomenon, for a staggering $2 billion. Although there hasn't been anything official from either Mojang or Microsoft, the source of the rumor is The Wall Street Journal, arguably the most reliable source you could ask for in this industry. Minecraft has sold in excess of 55 million copies since its 2011 launch. It's available on PC, iPhone, tablets, Xbox platforms, PlayStation consoles, and pretty much everything digital with a screen. The purchase would also come with the massive amount of franchising and merchandise. Although the rights to the game itself would be a massive purchase, it's the potential for merchandise sales and exclusivity details that are the real incentive here. If the rumor proves true Microsoft could release exclusive, or at least timed exclusive, Minecraft content on their own platforms and then bath in the flood of money from merchandise sales.Leave a comment
