Defense Of The Ancients 2 Surpasses World Of Warcraft “Subscriber” Numbers
According to a post on MMORPG.com World of Warcraft can no longer claim to be the number one MMO on the planet as the massively popular free MOBA title, Defense of the Ancients 2, now boasts 7.86 million subscribers. There is a slight difference though as World of Warcraft are subscribers in the traditional sense, paying $15 a month to enjoy the privilege, whereas Defense of the Ancients 2 is an entirely free-to-play online MMO game.
Dagla, a Reddit user, noticed that DOTA 2's official blog page, which houses a counter tracking where the number of unique players are tracked, showed the number of players as 7.86 million. This exceeded the number of subscribers World of Warcraft had. When Activision shared the details, it had reported 7.8 million subscribers.
It's a bit naive to suggest Defense of the Ancients 2 is dethroning the MMO giant but it's still great news to see the MOBA genre continue to grow at such a pace.
