Guild Wars was one of the first MMORPG games to step away from the typical class-based character restrictions, instead offering players a highly versatile profession system. There's a large variety of different professions such as Assassin, Ritualist, Paragon, Monk and more, each with their own sets of skills and abilities. Unlike your typical MMO games, the skills and abilities in Guild Wars don't simply effect your enemies, they can also manipulate the environment and other characters around you. Players can eventually equip 2 professions, giving them the skills, stats and abilities from both professions. This creates a huge amount of possibility in character advancement, creating a truly unique foundation for the games instanced PvP system.

One of the most appealing aspects to Guild Wars at launch, and still to this day, is the design of the PvP system. Unlike other games that force players to spend weeks developing their character, Guild Wars gives players the opportunity to dive straight into the PvP action. PvP is restricted to level 20 characters but those without a maximum level character are able to create a PvP exclusive character that begins at level 20 and can't enter PvE zones. Alternatively dedicated players are able to level in the more traditional sense, becoming slightly more powerful than a newly created level 20 PvP character.
