Upon starting Dragon Eternity, the game allows you to choose between 2 warring factions, your characters gender and after a short tutorial, your characters main class. Characters can reach a maximum level of 60, each level unlocks new weapons and armor to purchase as well as the opportunity to learn more abilities and spells.

The available classes are Berserker, Witcher and Paladin, each having control of 3 of the 6 available elements. Once you reach level 6 you unlock your Spell Book, this book contains all of the spells available to your class and also includes the interface that you use to improve your spells. As you use each spell in battle, you earn mastery points towards that specific spell, the more mastery points you earn, the stronger the ability gets. You can learn new abilities from various sources such as items, trainers and even enemy monsters.

The combat is quite a fresh approach for the browser-based genre, it's turn based and features 2D side-on view that feels very similar to old style RPG games such as the early Final Fantasy titles. Your armor and weapons change the appearance of your character in battle which is really rewarding after spending many hours trying to get the rarer items. Pets can also accompany you in battle, fighting alongside you or healing your character. This creates for many variations of fighting styles, adding a unique element to the PvP competitions.

One of the most appealing features to Dragon Eternity is the ability to to have a Dragon as a companion however it is no easy feat. Players much reach level 16, complete 6 trials set by the Elder Dragons and reassemble the Amulet of Melding. If you're strong enough to complete those tasks, you get to select your Dragon gender and type, there are 6 types available, all of which have their own special abilities and stat points. Dragons increase in level alongside the player, becoming more powerful as they grow and unlocking stronger abilities.
