DC Universe Online is a superhero themed MMORPG based on the popular DC Comics franchise. The game recently added a free to play revenue model, allowing players to explore iconic locations such as Gotham City, without paying a subscription.

One of the most appealing aspects of DC Universe is the active combat system. Unlike other MMORPG games, you're not restricted by a simple macro bar, repeating the same key presses over and over, you're given full control over your character, controlling each fight blow for blow. Players are given the choice of 6 unique power sets, including Fire, Ice, Mental, Nature, Sorcery and Gadgets. Each power set can be compared to popular DC heroes, with Batman being similar to Gadgets etc.

DC Universe also has the benefit of including trademarked superheroes to play alongside you. The game features several famous and infamous characters including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman and representing the evil doers, Joker, Lex Luthor and Circe. Each of these characters become involved in your heroes storyline at some point, some in the form of mentors, others in the form of your arch nemesis. No superhero MMO is complete without super travel powers and DC Universe offers 3 diverse abilities to help you get around. Players can choose from Super Speed, Acrobatics and Flight, all of which offer different movement speed buffs and advantages in combat.

When playing a superhero MMORPG, you're probably going to compare it to the likes of City of Heroes and the more recent Champions Online. DC Universe plays very similar to both titles, offering the same style of combat and very familiar mechanics. DCUO is backed by Sony Entertainment Online so they have access to far more developers and investors than Cryptic. The game recently adopted a free to play model and has seen an increase of over 1000% active players, there's never been a better time to jump in to Gotham City.
