Castle of Heroes takes a fresh approach to MMORTS combat, most RTS browser-based titles restrict players to watching from a distance, Castle of Heroes allows players to get up close and personal during combat. When you enter combat, you can control each type of unit that is in your army giving them each personal commands and directions, having the choice of moving units into strategical positions or ordering them to use a special ability to get you out of a tight spot.

The Hero Progression system is also an interesting take on character progression, you get to choose your character from several races including Human, Undead and Orc with the majority having both a male and female option. Once you create your hero, you can assign troops to their command and send them on battles around the world map. As your hero gains experience, they will grow in strength and gain access to new abilities and perks. Unlike other free to play browser titles, Castle of Heroes allows full customization of your hero following typical MMORPG fashion, including 8+ gear slots, armor and weapons that change appearance and the ability to enchant your equipment to improve its abilit.

Joining a guild is an important part of Castle of Heroes, it unlocks new abilities for your character, gives you access to guild specific dungeons and even allows for diplomacy options between other guilds. Forging partnerships to control resources and enemy strongholds is vital and guilds with enough members to surround large areas, gather resource and climb the leaderboards at an increased rate.
