Will League Of Legends Work On Next-Generation Consoles?
Recently rumors began circulating the internet following a single users post on a popular forum. The rumor? The possible addition of League of Legends to the Xbox One launch lineup. Let me start by saying that this rumor has no official support or background whatsoever, the entire thing is based purely on the post made by an undisclosed individual but it does provoke some interesting thought and discussion.
If you take a quick second to look at the evolution of the MOBA genre you’ll find that the foundations were in place for many years before Riot Games revealed League of Legends to the world. Since that time we’ve seen a massive influx of MOBA titles come to the genre, everything from AAA publishers to new indie developers wanted a slice of the MOBA pie. To this day there are very few MOBA games that players consider popular but the ones that have captured the hearts of strategy fans will run for many years to come.
But can Riot Games and Microsoft bring that success to the console market? Well it’s possible but there will be a few bumps in the road. For one Microsoft will have to be ready to provide the service for free. Players all over the world currently enjoy LoL without ever having to spend a dime and if they want that same success on the console market, they’ll need to do the same.
Controls will also be a big issue as strategy-based games have always been more responsive on the PC. Holding your mouse over an enemy target before rapidly moving around is easy enough with a keyboard and mouse but bringing an Xbox pad into the equation changes things entirely.
The issues continue with the questionable benefits for Microsoft. Unless they bring League of Legends under a premium fee, they’re not going to make an return on it. Will this mean Riot Games will have to raise the prices of skins and other items to give Microsoft their cut?
The problems are obvious, the benefits are obvious but the possibility is still a shade darker than gray. We may never see League of Legends come to next-generation consoles, but we can all hope!
