Why Monster Hunter Online Will Release In The West
The Monster Hunter franchise has never really been hugely popular here in the West, well that was until the release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the Nintendo Wii U. The Wii U struggled at launch due to a poor selection of available games but Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate saw massive increases in unit sales with France reporting a 300% increase while the UK enjoyed a 115% climb in Wii U sales. I don't even consider myself a Nintendo fan but I was excited enough to purchase the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate Edition and I don't regret it a single bit. In early April of this year a new website was created teasing another MMO for the Monster Hunter franchise and within a week Crytek sent out a press release announcing the use of the Cry Engine 3 to support the game. Inside that press release a very simple word forced Crytek to recant that part of the release days later:“The Monster Hunter games are known for immersing players in breathtaking worlds where great gameplay and spectacular sights go hand in hand,” said Areil Cai, Director of Business Development – CryENGINE. “CryENGINE 3 is the perfect fit for the series, and will ensure Tencent Games and Capcom are well equipped to make Monster Hunter Online the groundbreaking MMORPG experience fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating.”Appealing to a worldwide audience doesn't usually mean the game is going to be restricted to a certain region or country. However, Crytek did state that this was an accident and they reworded the press release a few days later. It's not all that common for that to happen so the evidence would suggest that the response was big enough to shake the foundations of even the biggest of engine providers. More recently a new Monster Hunter Online video was released showcasing 8 minutes of game play footage. Although the video showcased a lot of new features and enemies, that's not important. What is important is yet another huge response from the gaming and Monster Hunter community. The release of the previous Monster Hunter MMO, Monster Hunter Frontier, wasn't met with anywhere near the levels of excitement we're seeing today. Sure, the game performed well in Japan as it sold 93,000 copies during its first week of launch and the Xbox 360 version was also quite successful. However, if we compare that to Monster Hunter Online and the supporting hype of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, it's a whole different scenario. Capcom reported that Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, among a few other titles, helped to boost their annual sales by 14.6% with Monster Hunter only missing the top spot due to digital downloads which aren't used in NPD reports. A Capcom investors meeting shortly after the success of Monster Hunter Online speculated that Monster Hunter 4 would sell 2.8m copies, over double when compared with rumored previous estimations. So what does all this mean? Capcom are fully aware of the huge success of Monster Hunter here in the West. However, as with previous titles Capcom are not at the helm of this project as Tencent Games are taking the reigns. The relationship between the two companies has seen many a successful Monster Hunter game in recent years so there is literally no reason to not expect a Western release. The industry is all about profits and it's clear that MMO's do well in the West and it's even clearer that there's massive demand for another Monster Hunter title.
