Who Plays These MMO Games? Seriously
When I tell people that I write about games for a living I quite often find the responses identical. They always tell me how awesome it must be to play games all day everyday and they also immediately assume that I know everything about every title ever released. Although I like to think I have quite the collection of useless gaming trivia stored in my aging noggin, I can’t quite boast to know absolutely everything. One thing that I really don’t understand is the appeal of certain MMO games.
You all know what I’m talking about. You read the odd news article about an MMO game you’ve never heard of before hearing of it again months later. Sometimes the stories pique your interest and you take a look but most of the time you don’t bother. Even in the mix of big name releases such as Guild Wars 2, The Elder Scrolls Online and Final Fantasy XIV, there still appears to be people playing games that the majority of us just don’t care about.
I could sit here and list hundreds, literally hundreds, but I don’t feel there’s a need. Anyone that considers themselves a fan of the MMO genre could easily list as many. What kind of MMO gamer totally ignores the big releases for games that a large majority of players have never touched? I’m not talking about the indie gems or the games with actual effort put into them. I’m talking about the tons of carbon copy MMO games available on portals for the likes of Aeria Games, Perfect World Entertainment and OGPlanet.
What’s the appeal? These people must know there are literally hundreds of games better than the ones available on these portals and most are for free. Yet the terribly poor MMO game still manages to attract enough people to survive.
So here’s your challenge. Can you name 5 games you’ve heard of, never played, and not sure anyone else has played?
