What Does Being A Noob Mean In Today’s MMO Industry?
Although the MMO industry is constantly evolving there are a few things that remain the same. Regardless of genre, regardless of type, players will constantly throw around the term “Noob” or “Newb”. In different circles and different games the terms can mean quite the opposite. Newb is quite often used as a friendly term to describe new players whereas Noob is generally thrown around as an insult, regardless of the individuals experience or ability.
More often than not you’ll see the term used in competitive games such as MMOFPS and MOBA titles, although it’s not totally uncommon in the world of the MMORPG. It’s usually a quick way of instigating a heated situation, with the response from the accused usually being an insulting one. But why do we, as players, feel the need to throw around a term that is actually used to describe something that’s not insulting at all?
It doesn’t matter what games you’ve played or how much you’ve achieved, we’ve all been a new player at some point or another, and worthy of the definition of Newb. I’ve actually heard players say they’re too embarrassed to ask a question in wide-spread chat through fear of being branded a Noob. Knowledge is power and there’s no better way to obtain knowledge than asking a simple question.
Like many players, I couldn’t care less what people called me on the internet. I don’t fear being branded a Noob and I’m quite happy to endure the term Newb. But why do people take such a small insult so deeply to heart? Why do we feel the need to insult a new player when our game of choice would actually die without them? Leave your thoughts below.
