Top 10 MOBA Games 2014 List
As we approach the final quarter of 2014 we take a look at the top 10 MOBA games of 2014. Expect to see some familiar faces and some genre newcomers as we analyze the top 10 MOBA's of 2014. 10 - Infinite Crisis Map altering events, dynamic map progression and character design based on one of the largest super hero franchises in existence, it's Infinite Crisis. These ingredients may sound like the perfect recipe for MOBA success but anyone short of 200 years comic book experience will likely drown in the flood of lore surrounding the 52 worlds of the DC Multiverse. Still a great game in its own right, a lack of identity and distinguishing elements may see Infinite Crisis vanish from lists such as these next year, so enjoy it while it last. 9 - Dawngate Dawngate is a truly innovative MOBA from Waystone Games that distinguishes itself from the flood of MOBA titles with a few minor but very noticeable changes to foundation mechanics. Removing the traditional tri-lane approach to map design, Dawngate delivers two-lane based game play to encourage larger scale combat at the early stages of the MOBA experience. Couple this with respawning towers, resource generating objectives and deeper customization than most MOBA games on the market today and you've got yourself a winner. Dawngate may not be perfect, but you cannot help but admire the balls it takes to go against the norm. 8 - Cannons Lasers Rockets Setting itself apart from other titles in the MOBA genre, Cannons, Lasers and Rockets delivers an accessible combination of ingredients in an exciting spacial themed MOBA game with intricate 2D combat and impressive 3D environments. Offering elements that appeal to both pro and casual gamers alike, Cannons, Lasers and Rockets may lack the marketing prowess of the biggest publishers in the MOBA genre but don't let that fool you. Space has never been so deadly. 7 - AirMech Carbon Games prove you can reinvent a genre with nothing more than the simple leap from man to machine as they deliver the robot-based MOBA game, AirMech. Instead of the traditionally fantasy infused characters present in the genre today, AirMech puts players in control of customizable mechs of mass destruction in an exciting science-fiction setting and a free-to-play environment. It may lack the graphics, huge community and general quality of the biggest names in the genre but it's unique approach to character design and implementation should not be ignored. 6 - Deadbreed In a genre dominated by free-to-play excellence and micro-transaction wizardry, many don't see room for a premium priced MOBA game but Deadbreed players see it differently. If you've grown tired of the typical love, light and rainbows of the traditional MOBA fantasy setting, Deadbreed could be for you. Complex MOBA mechanics on an creepy themed backdrop deliver an experience perfectly catered for players willing to explore the darker sides of the human imagination. If you're bored of Yordles and tired of eating trees, $10 will get you Early Access to something a little different with Deadbreed. 5 - Dead Island: Epidemic If there's two things missing from the MOBA mix, it's support of a large non-genre franchise and the introduction of everyone's favourite flesh-eating baddies, the iconic zombie. Dead Island: Epidemic delivers both of these ingredients in Deep Silver's first foray into the MMO space. Familiar and accessible, Dead Island: Epidemic delivers a WAS & D movement system with accuracy based abilities, a huge loot and crafting system and support of the multi-award winning Dead Island franchise. 4 - Defense Of The Ancients 2 The only official successor to the grand daddy of the MOBA genre sees Valve once again lead the charge with Defence of the Ancients 2. Making a return with a stable of iconic characters from the original DOTA experience, DOTA 2 breaks the shackles that restrain many in the genre with a number of unique elements on display. Boasting the biggest selection of aesthetically pleasing character customization items in the genre, DOTA compliments the MOBA genre with a dynamic map experience, iconic isometric gameplay and the ability to eat trees. Yeah, I don't get it either. 3 - League of Legends A game that needs no introduction. League of Legends is quite simply the most popular MOBA game in existence today. Once cannot debate the millions of logged hours across the community, hugely impressive dedication of Riot Games, and the increasingly dominant presence in the competitive sport environment. If you're watching this video or reading this article, it's almost guaranteed that you've already sampled League of Legends to some degree, but who says we can't play more than one MOBA at a time? 2 - SMITE One of the fastest growing MOBA games of the year and the first on this list to be released on the next-generation platform, Xbox One. It's familiar third-person perspective makes it the perfect teething MOBA for those new to the genre while its complex mechanics, accessible game modes and myriad of familiar characters from throughout myth and legend deliver the thrill of combat expected from veterans of the MOBA genre. 1 - Heroes Of The Storm You've seen the top 9, you can't say you didn't expect Heroes of the Storm to take the top spot. World of Warcraft, Diablo, Hearthstone, every game and genre Blizzard touches turn to gold. It would be stupid to expect any different with Heroes of the Storm. Conforming to the typical fantasy setting, Heroes of the Storm displays innovative additions to time-proven MOBA mechanics alongside the addition of characters made famous from throughout the Warcraft franchise. Not quite available to the general gaming audience as of yet, Heroes of the Storm is almost guaranteed to make a massive wave when Blizzard invade the MOBA genre.
