Roblox – Review
The world of the create your own MMO game is a small one, well practically invisible as Roblox is one of the only online titles that allows players to construct their own MMO game world. With the upcoming release of GameGlobe, Roblox may find itself up against far superior competition, so we decided to go and take a peek to see if Roblox can compare to the upcoming title from Square Enix.
For those of you not familiar with Roblox, it’s a unique online game that allows players to construct their own world using objects and blocks similar to that of Lego. Players can choose to create something as basic as a small house, to far more in-depth options of creating their own genre of game, it’s all possible in the world of Roblox.
Loading in after getting my free Robux codes, I was a bit disappointed with the complete lack of any serious tutorial. It told me how to move around the game world using typical W,A,S and D controls, but other than that, there was nothing to it. Considering the huge depth to Roblox, I was expecting more information on how to use the various switches and wires available when building my own area, but alas it was not meant to be. So I started to throw random bricks on my little plot of land, originally intending to design a huge castle, but I got bored pretty quickly. So I decided to take a more detailed look at what was available in the build options.
To build, players simply have to click the stamp icon at the bottom of the screen. They’re then given the choice of what they wish to place down. There’s a massive variety of items available, from small cube-like bricks, to in-depth gates and puzzles. This got me a little more excited as I figured out I was able to perform a variety of complex tasks, with a simple push of a button. Firstly I built a large wall and placed a door in the center, I then decided to place a switch that would make the door open. However, I also noticed an incinerator platform that burned anything that touched it. So instead I decided to place the incinerator outside the door, forcing people to have to turn it off via the switch if they wished to enter.
Building and stuff was all quite fun but I didn’t really feel like I was accomplishing anything as I knew nothing I could create would compete with the players that have spent weeks and months constructing their own little world. So I decided to go an explore a few other games created by the community. The first one I stumbled across was bowling and quite surprisingly, it worked. I walked up to the machine, hit the button for a ball and threw it at the pins but it was still just bowling so I moved on. The next game I came across was far more intriguing. It was a strategy building game that allowed players to construct their own army base and assault the other bases nearby. I collected cash by standing on certain blocks, and then chose what to build. I was able to build my fort walls, a helicopter pad and various missile silos. Although I was killed every 3 seconds by a guy with a slingshot, this really opened my mind to exactly how much a player could accomplish by using the Roblox world building system. It’s definitely a game worthy of attention, but the graphics really let it down.
Overall, Roblox offers quite a unique new player experience but when compared to the upcoming GameGlobe, it falls short in practically every aspect, more noticeably the graphics and combat. I’d imagine that a large portion of the veteran Roblox players will head over to GameGlobe once it’s released, purely down to the superior features and options.
Pros
– Large choice of possible building options
– Huge amount of depth for players with enough time
Cons
– Limited chat options
– Low quality graphics
