New MOBA Characters And The Constant OP Debate
I consider myself to be quite a seasoned MOBA player. I’ve played thousands of matches across multiple games including everything from League of Legends to SMITE but one thing I find common across practically every MOBA game, the constant complaints of over-powered abilities with brand new characters.
The popularity of many of today’s modern MOBA titles can be tied directly to the amount of characters available. Players love choice, they love the option of mastering dozens and dozens of characters, and some players purposely wait for over-powered characters before playing ranked games so that they can raise their ELO but in all honest, how over-powered are most of these characters?
In all honesty, most of them are released at a similar standard to current characters. Sure, developers are not perfect and from time to time an over-powered ability or two leaks through the cracks but there’s very few occasions in which a brand new character has totally broken a game.
More often than not it is the fault of the players, not the developers, when a new character is considered over-powered. Every hardened MOBA player will tell you, one of the best ways to become an expert player is to play and master the abilities of every character in the game. Not only does this allow you to be more potent with each character but it’s also the best way of learning how to counter them in combat.
This theory directly ties with the release of new characters. How can players expect to master countering a specific character when they’ve only played against them once or twice? In short, they can’t. Most players have no idea exactly what statistics developers have access to. Every single ability fire, every single point of damage, it’s all recorded and provided to developers so that they’re able to balance abilities and characters.
Next time you feel the need to rage because a new character is giving you problems, pause for a second and evaluate exactly why you died. More often than not you’ll find the new character used something you weren’t expecting.
What do you think? Should players chill the hell out?

Yep I totally agree with all of this. Players just believe it is OP because they do not understand how to fight against it.
