Lack Of Cosmetic Armor Features Results In A Dull MMO Experience
As some of our regular readers will already know, I’ve been playing a lot of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn recently and although I’m having a complete blast there are a number of issues that are hindering my enjoyment. Last week I spoke about the lack of mob variety as a problem but this week I thought I’d tackle something a little less severe, cosmetic armor sets.
This feature has many names and faces in the MMO world but they all share one thing in common; they give the player the option of what to wear. Don’t get me wrong, the armor sets and designs in Final Fantasy XIV are amazing, far superior to Final Fantasy XI, but seldom is it common to have a complete set for any serious length of time.
As MMO players we all want to be as powerful as we can be. Whether that’s because you want to solo quicker or provide more support for your parties, it’s something most MMO gamers share in common. However, we also want to look good while doing it. I recently got a complete set of Heavy Bronze armor for my MRD and after applying a few bits of dye it looked amazing, for about 3 quests before I received gear with better stats thus forcing me to look stupid. I know what you’re thinking, don’t wear that armor right? But in today’s MMO environment I don’t understand why I should be expected to sacrifice anything.
There are literally dozens of MMO games that let players choose 1 armor set for appearances and another for the actual stats. Some have the feature at launch, others add it at a later date, but after the lengthy development process of FFXIV I cannot understand why this feature was so overlooked.
Whether you crafted the items yourself, purchased them from the marketplace or chose them as a quest reward, you chose that item. You wanted it for some reason, so why force us to make a choice? I know it’s a feature planned in the near future but I can’t help but feel it should have been in at launch.
How do you feel about it? Does your appearance in an MMORPG game really matter or am I just being picky? Leave a comment below.
