I’ve Just Finished The FFXIV Story And..
Let me start by first saying that I will not feature any major spoilers within this article, I’m just hoping to share my personal feelings and experiences involving the main quest line in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
As with many MMORPG games today Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn features a main quest line that progresses as your character grows in strength. One of the greatest aspects of the main quests in FFXIV is the fact that they’re not miles apart. I never once had to grind in order to achieve the level needed to participate in the next story quest, although I did happily complete most dungeons and side-quests that I encountered.
So with the dreaded boring grind between missions a non-issue I was left to enjoy the actual content itself, but can MMO games ever match the story available in their offline counterparts? Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn takes players on a true adventure of discovery and heroics as they follow the traditional world saving route made famous by the Final Fantasy franchise. Your character acts as the main hero as you progress through the game, encountering new enemies and antagonists every step of the way. There are some rather mundane and frustrating moments. As an example, you’re mere minutes away from a battle of massively epic proportions and what are you doing? Gathering meat from animals to cook stew and raise the morale of troops; an important task but not one that should be given to an adventurer with such reputation.
Those drawbacks happen a few times as you explore the story in Eorzea but they quickly become a distant memory as you approach the meat of the content. Multiple allies with unique personalities and ideals, varied foes each with their own diabolical level of evildoing’s, and several twists that very few people would see coming. It’s all on display and does the Final Fantasy name proud. I would love to discuss a certain part of the story in which an iconic enemy is introduced, but alas I feel that would spoil what I personally consider to be one of the greatest cut-scenes I’ve ever experienced in an online game.
There are some minor technical faults that hinder enjoyment but only very slightly. Such as the bad mouthing, the delayed animations during a conversation and the seemingly random mix of voiced-over and text-based cut-scenes.
Overall I consider my experience with the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn story line to be a very positive one. My expectations were low but the epic moments accompanied with the iconic characters helped to deliver a true Final Fantasy story…It was epic!
In a few months I’ll dive deeper into a review on the story but as I know many people are still on their way to 50, I chose to avoid it for today.
