Forsaken World – Review
Forsaken World is another free to play MMORPG from developers, Perfect World Entertainment. PWE are no strangers to the MMO world, publishing top titles such as War of the Immortals, Raiderz and the newly released, Blacklight Retribution. Forsaken World takes place after a great battle between Dyos and Nyos, rulers of the Universe that discovered the world of Eyrda. The gods created a number of races to aid in their conquest of Eyrda, all of which are playable in the game.
As is common with PWE games, Forsaken World includes a large list of races and playable classes. Each race has their own set of attributes and abilities, and within each race, is a select number of classes. Certain races are restricted from playing other classes, which could be seen as a drawback but it still leaves plenty of choice.
Humans
Created to mimic the appearance of Vyda, Illyfue created the Human race to settle on the western part of the continent. Humans are the most versatile in terms of class choices, they can play Warrior, Assassin, Mage and Priest.
Elf
Also created by Illyfue, the Elves were originally designed to be a forest dwelling slave race. Elves get a fair amount of choice in terms of classes, being able to use Warrior, Priest, Bard.
Dwarf
Created by the god Tytan, to help him mine, the Dwarves are a stout race that specialize in long-range damage using the Marksman class. It’s the only class available to the Dwarves but they do get to use a gun, which you can’t really argue with.
Stoneman
Tytan created the Stonemen by carving them out of huge sacred stones. Like the Dwarves they’re restricted to using 1 class, the Protector.
Kindred
The Kindred are of unknown origins, and act as one of the more mystical races in the world of Eyrda. They can choose Assassin and Mage, and are also the only race that is able to use the Vampire class.
Once you’ve chosen your race and class, you get the regular customization options for your character. You can choose from a predefined selection of faces, not being able to edit individual parts other than hairstyle and color. You also get to select your Birthday which chooses your star sign, this effects buffs you can get at certain times. You begin your journey in the game world after a long slumber, you remember nothing but your name and must venture forth to uncover the details of your past. From here, you’re introduced to the games features and mechanics via several tutorial type quests that will give you a few items, as well as the basic knowledge needed to play your class. Similar to other PWE games, players can use the auto-track quest system to be able to complete quests quickly. Simply by clicking on the desired NPC’s name, or monster location, the game will automatically move your character to that position. Reducing the time it takes for you to go between towns or quest NPC’s. Another helpful tool for new players is the Memento Box, which unlocks at level intervals, 2, 5, 10 etc. Each time you open it you get new items and equipment, some offer buffs for long periods of time, while other provide you with an unlimited healing tool.
As you travel through the tutorial quests you can quickly see the strengths of Forsaken World. Some of the area designs are truly inspiring, featuring floating castles surrounded by the undead, to mystical oasis’s and flourishing forests. Each area feels totally unique and comes with its own set of NPC’s, enemy monsters and quest lines. I chose a Vampire as my class, and within just a few levels, I felt like I was strong enough to beat Dyos and Nyos myself. Each class gains access to a Soulforce skill, which uses points that accumulate during battle. Although each class has a unique Soulforce skill, the Vampire’s is a devastating AoE that tears apart anything close enough to get hit by it. I spent a good 20 minutes just sitting near a large spawn of zombies, gathering them in one spot and one-hitting about 20 at a time. I only moved on as I was rushed for time, I could have quite happily sat there all day. Out of the new player experience, the combat is easily the most interesting feature. The animations are great to watch, even for the auto-attack and beginner abilities, the enemy designs are also quite cool, fighting everything from basic wolves to the undead.
Overall, the game feels very similar to other Perfect World Entertainment games, although it does have a slightly more sinister feel to it, which is complimented by both the graphical style and soundtrack. Obviously I didn’t review much past the new player experience, but as far as MMORPG games go, Forsaken World has one of the most enjoyable starting experiences that I’ve ever had.
