Final Fantasy XIV: Have You Watched The Video? Get Lost
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn continues to go from strength to strength ahead of the upcoming release of the 2.1 update but for my latest article surrounding the world of Eorzea I wanted to discuss a rather tedious trend emerging from the community.
What am I talking about? The expectations the community have in regards to players experiencing a dungeon or boss fight for the first time. I recently reached 50 on my Warrior not too long ago and immediately dived into the end-game content. Although I’m a firm believer that the journey is important in an MMO, I personally enjoy the fine-tuning and challenges offered by end-game content.
I’m not the hardcore player I once was. I rarely get to spend more than a few hours in Eorzea so when I finally have some time to sink into the game, the last thing I want to do is waste an hour or so watching videos.
I joined the Ifrit HM fight, excited to see what the God of Hellfire had on offer, only to be met with quitting allies and raging party members because I didn’t watch a video beforehand. I can understand that people have low expectations of other players but at the same time, who are they to dictate what I do with my spare time? I went through the entire game without watching a video on a dungeon or boss battle, and not once was I overwhelmed. Sometimes other players would take 30 seconds of their time to explain the mechanics of the boss battle, which is welcomed information as a tank, but that was the extent of my tutorials.
I went through the entire Ifrit HM fight, Garuda HM and 3 of the level 50 dungeons without watching a video and never once was I responsible for a wipe. I struggled with my class at times but that’s nothing a video could have helped with.
What happened to the joy of exploration? The thrill of the unknown? I don’t want to watch someone else experience content, I want to experience it for myself. To see players quit a party instantly after 1-2 people say they haven’t watched a video is ridiculous and I honestly have no idea where this trend has come from. I’ve never once heard of it in other MMO titles outside of guild-specific raid groups or parties but in general, random groups are pot luck.
Have you had a similar experience with end-game content? Do you feel that every player should be forced to watch a video before enjoying the game? Leave your thoughts below.

let me honest I hate looking things up for mmos like how to do a dungeon, whats the best build, how to do this mission or that mission. I love to explore the game content and if the other members of the party say I quit because of some video i didn’t watch well screw them I find another party who explains it to me on what I should do. Like you said offered advice on how to kill the beast is welcomed. But to watch a video on how to kill a beast the easiest way is really boring…and brings no life to the game.
