Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Chocobo Breeding
December is quickly approaching and with it the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Update 2.1 but a recent developer post highlighted something I personally find far more exciting, Chocobo Breeding. The latest developer post on the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Lodestone highlighted some of the Free Company housing features coming with the next update, but hidden away at the bottom of the post was some information regarding planned additions to the highly anticipated feature:
- A crafting workshop where players can build vehicles such as airships.
- An orchestrion to change the music played inside houses.
- A chocobo stable to raise chocobos.
- Mannequins that can be dressed with player gear.
- A bulletin board that can be place inside the house.
Each of these freshly announced features are exciting in their own right but none come close to the tidal wave of nostalgia related to the breeding of Chocobos. One of the most iconic characters from throughout the Final Fantasy franchise the Chocobo has played an important part in dozens of games. Whether that role be a simple companion or an interesting breeding mechanic as seen in Final Fantasy VII, Chocobo’s are always about somewhere.
Currently the Chocobo’s in Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn are the target of much criticism. They currently perform 2 different roles, mounts and combat companions. As a mount they do what you would expect, they give players the option of traveling in a faster and safer manner; not many problems and works fine. The other role however is disappointing. Players can summon their Chocobo using an in-game item which then allows their furry friend to aid them in combat. However, players are then not able to mount their Chocobo for the full duration of the summon unless they actually withdraw and re-summon, costing yet more cash and items. So for the most part players completely ignore the latter role and use the Chocobo purely as a mount.
The Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Chocobo Breeding feature could be used in a number of ways but whatever Square Enix decide, it’s clear the current systems will need some attention first. The battle companion Chocobo’s can progress in many different ways so there’s a good chance that Square Enix will allow players to own more than one Chocobo at a time, giving us the opportunity to have a tank, dps and healing companion.
However, there are far more exciting possible applications for Chocobo Breeding. Obviously this is pure speculation but Square Enix can take inspiration from previous Final Fantasy titles to deliver exciting features and opportunities. They could allow players to raise Chocobo’s for Chocobo Dueling, Chocobo Racing, maybe we could even train Chocobo’s to see out crafting materials and resources.
It’s the first official mentioning of the feature that I’ve seen so I’m sure we can expect to hear more details following the 2.1 update but I expect much of that time I’ll be dreaming over the potential applications of Chocobo Breeding.
