Splitscreen Studios recently gave us the opportunity to dive into their dinosaur - Wild West hybrid MMO, Dino Storm. Now, when somebody mentions an MMO title that combines the Wild West with dinosaurs, what exactly are you meant to expect? When I sat down to review Dino Storm, I had no idea what was waiting for me, but now, I can definitely say it didn't disappoint.
As with all MMO titles the first thing you'll want to do is to create your character, or ranger. Your ranger is the character you'll be using for your time exploring the world of Dino Storm. The character creation was probably one of the more lackluster parts of our review as there really isn't all that many options at the start. You can choose your rangers pants, shirt, and hat but you can also customize the base color of your loyal dinosaur.
After creating your character you'll start to work your way through the games tutorial. Similar to other MMORPG games, the tutorial introduces you to the basic features within the game such as the quests, combat system and character progression. You can use either the W,A,S and D keys to move, or your mouse. I would advise using the keyboard to move as there are some issues with the pathing when using long-range mouse movements.
The combat is one of the more defining features of the game, and it's not hard to see why when you're a ranger mounted on a dinosaur firing a laser gun. Both your ranger and your dinosaur can attack your enemies as you use a mixture of movement patterns and attacks to confuse your opponents. You can choose either the standard MMO approach and stand toe to toe with your enemies using your abilities, or you can circle your enemies using your dinosaurs agility to your advantage.
As you progress through the game, a large variety of customization options appear. There's dozens of different dinosaur types, each with their own selection of skills and abilities. You can also change the appearance of your dinosaur using the various skin features that are available. The same options of customization apply to your ranger as you can upgrade your clothes, laser weapons and titles.
There's also a huge achievement system in Dino Storm that rewards players with in-game items for completing certain quests, defeating large amounts of monsters, or participating in the territory based PvP.
Overall, Dino Storm provides a great mix of innovative ideas with regular MMORPG features. For more information, read our Dino Storm article.
