BattleForge – Preview
Battle Forge is a MMORTS game from german EA Phenomic studio, where you fight for supremacy and fame in on online environment, with armies created unleashed from a deck of cards.
While I am not sure if they copied Saga concept, or just come with the same idea to mix online rts environment with collectible cards, similar in concept with the Magic the Gathering series, they did it very well. It more like a business concept then an innovative concept to mix these two genres. Why? Because the game will be free, but the cards will costs money, and people that like rare cards or what to build a super deck will buy them from the site, and others will trade what they have with other players. All these are good things that will bring them more money then the normal subscription system.
So how it works? Well you start in an online environment which is basically the main lobby, here you can chat with players, create decks, trade decks, test your decks in the sandbox mode, and there is the world map, where you can start PVE/PVP adventures alone or with 3 or 12 total players aside or in teams.
When you decide to enter a battle, you can only go with 20 cards from your deck which you created in the sandbox mode, lobby, cards that will help you spawn units, unleash spells on your enemies, and even build defensive or offensive structure. Having only 20 cards available for each player in the mission will create hundreds of strategies, on how to crash your opponents which can only please us.
Cards requires power to be summon onto battlefield, power that you get from power generators you build in the missions, maps, and orbs which you get from building monuments. Once used a card it cannot used again in that mission also some spells have a cool down so you cant go berserk with spells which are very destructive and well design in terms graphic effects.
When you build a monument, you will be asked what orb to be built on that monument, and here we have the four schools. Frost, Fire, Nature, Shadow. Each card of these schools require at least on orb that belongs to their schools. For example to summon a spell that belongs to the Fire school, we will need available a monument with a Fire Orb (orbs doesn’t consume in the process, only power). More powerful cards require one orb of their schools, plus two or more orbs that belong to any school.
There is also PVP available, and in a later version Tournaments where players will battle against each other from supremacy.
In terms of graphics Battle Forge looks good, it moves well, and the effects of the spells and special abilities are incredible, the models could use some more work, some fonts are to small and blurry but all in all it looks great and it plays great. For those that love mmorts games or are just sick of the classic mmorpg games, we fully recommend this game.
