The Benefits Of Player Created Content
With the recent release of the Player Studio in PlanetSide 2, we take a quick look at the benefits and importance of player created content in today’s MMORPG games. It’s not exactly breaking new ground as we’ve all seen games that offer player created content but very few manage to deliver in regards to a reliable implementation system. Some of the older games that offered player created content required ridiculously long and tedious acceptance programs, with most games having each submission reviewed manually. You can image the time restraints this would place on any developer and the added cost may not always be worth the benefits.
However, as technology evolves and developers bring new tools to the table, there really isn’t any reason not to include player created content in any game. I have been a part of hundreds of online communities and I’m still amazed at the quality of content a community can create. Everything from artistic interpretations of their favorite events to full-scale real-life counterparts of weapons and items.
PlanetSide 2 has one of the biggest communities ever seen in an MMOFPS game which can now directly influence the potential of future updates thanks to the possibilities of player created content. There’s no lack of incentive either as Sony Online Entertainment have stated that items selected for the in-game marketplace will be sold for premium currency, giving the creator a portion of the proceeds every quarter.
Free content on a massive scale. Serious incentive for talented players and the opportunity to introduce your creation to millions of players. It’s a recipe that can do nothing but succeed and something we hope to see in more MMO games as time goes on.
