Next-Gen Finally Takes Notice Of MMO Potential
E3 has barely begun and we've already been treated to a plethora of exciting MMO related announcements. Previous generations have all but ignored the potential of MMO games but this years E3 has made one thing clear, next-gen MMO games could be playing a massive part. Current generation featured the likes of DC Universe Online and such, but the MMO never really penetrated the console community and most with the option chose to play on the PC.
However, the MMO world is all set to influence the next-gen MMO community in a massive way. Sony Online Entertainment announced that their critically acclaimed MMOFPS game, PlanetSide 2, will be launching as an exclusive Playstation 4 MMO, but E3 has seen other big names enter the mix.
Wargaming.net came out all guns blazing with the announcement of the award-winning World of Tanks debuting on the current gen Xbox with the Xbox 360 Edition. Although this isn't exactly next-gen, the developers have said they chose this platform due to its current popularity and fan base. Launching an MMO on a next-gen title at launch would be very difficult as there are always far less players. However, they have all but confirmed that World of Tanks will be joining next-generation at some point.
Another exciting announcement was featured at the Ubisoft conference, revealing their exciting, persistent world racing MMO, The Club. This is one of the few MMO games that will be directly released to the next-gen audience, unlike the others featured that are already available to PC players. As is normal with initial reveals the details are few and far between but the potential is still there.
I for one am extremely excited regarding the potential of MMO games on the next-generation consoles but what about you?
