Buying MMO Accounts: Would You Do It?
It has always been the way. Some individuals are happy to pour hundreds, or even thousands of hours worth of effort into something, while others would rather throw some cash at it for instant gratification. That same concept applies to MMO games. Some are happy to grind for months on end for that unique and powerful item, while others would rather pay for it, but how do you feel?
I read an article recently that made me decide to write on this topic. A Japanese player posted his Final Fantasy XI account for sale on a popular bidding site, priced at a staggering $4,500. The individual spent over 2,280 days worth of playtime, equivalent to 54,720 hours, and managed to accumulate some of the rarest items in the game. We all outgrow things from time to time and it appears this gamer wants to move on but is it a fair price? Well, yeah. The game is notoriously grindy and I know players that have played since launch and have still yet to acquire some of the items with this account. To put it into realistic terms, the hourly pay wouldn’t keep a small family afloat.
But honest MMO players quite often have issues with the purchasing and selling of game accounts, especially in a team-heavy grinding game like FFXI. Imagine joining a party of maximum level players only to find out one of them had never actually played the game, they just purchased the account.
That’s enough to ruin the experience of the entire group, but how do you feel? Are those with less time to invest justifying their purchase or does it ruin games and economies? Leave a comment below.
