Lord of Ultima – Review
Lord of Ultima is a free online strategy game available on EA’s Play4Free MMO portal. Lord of Ultima is arguably one of the highest quality, fantasy-based MMORTS games on the internet, featuring top of the range graphics, a variety of innovative features and dozens of social aspects to provide players with an intense strategy experience. This Lord of Ultima Review will focus on the aspects of the game exposed to new players, I’ll go over some of the pro’s and cons as well as detail some of the games more defining features.
As with the majority of free online MMO games today, Lord of Ultima introduces players to the various features of the game via an in-depth tutorial. The tutorial is great, it doesn’t take too long and includes everything you need to know to get you on your way. Once you’ve completed the tutorial, you gain access to the quest system. Questing in Lord of Ultima is very basic, you’re shown every quest available at your current level and can complete them in any order.
It doesn’t take long to realize where the strengths of Lord of Ultima lay. The construction and city management system is among the best I’ve seen in this genre. Players are given a huge area to construct their castle in, segmented to allow for extra defensive options. The buildings themselves function in a similar way to traditional MMORTS systems, with each building requiring a certain amount of time and resources to build. Each building can also be upgraded to be more effective. One of the most interesting aspects of the building system is the fact that many buildings support others when in close proximity, a feature that is sure to appeal to fans of min-maxing. Placing farms surrounded by open terrain increases food production rate, while building a copper mine near some ore increases copper production, both of these can be boosted further by adding a cottage nearby to house the workers. This works for other resources as well, such as gold. Townhouses generate gold through taxes, and by placing your citizens near a market, they’ll be willing to pay more. These effects spread across the majority of buildings in Lord of Ultima, providing players with an intricate construction and building advancement system rarely seen in the MMORTS genre.
The most negative aspect to Lord of Ultima is the travel times. Usually in our new player experience reviews, we like to introduce players to various game aspects, especially combat. But sadly, it would have taken us nearly six hours to review the combat aspect of Lord of Ultima. Sending our 5 man army just 7-8 squares away took almost six hours, a real pain considering the rest of the game offers so much freshness to the strategy genre.
Overall, Lord of Ultima is easily in the top 5 free online strategy games available at the moment. The construction and city management features are second to none, if it wasn’t for the lackluster combat and slow travel times, Lord of Ultima could easily score a 9-10/10.
Pros

– Very appealing city management system
– Huge area for city construction
