H1Z1 – Early Access Is No Excuse For A Poor Product
Just recently I discussed how ARK: Survival Evolved has restored my faith in Early Access but with a single flip of a coin I now want to look at the slightly uglier aspects of Early Access, when developers take support for granted. What game am I talking about? Well, if the title doesn't make it clear enough my gripes are with H1Z1, now under the wandering eyes of Daybreak Games - formerly Sony Online Entertainment. Now, when it comes to MMO gaming these guys are juggernauts. The roster of games associated with SOE and Daybreak Games is hugely impressive and their experience developing in the genre is hard to beat. So why 8 months after its initial release on Steam Early Access am I still struggling to even play the bloody thing? I finish work about 11pm, I've got maybe an hour or two to kill before having to hit the hay in preparation for another day at the office. What do I feel like doing? Blowing off some Steam in some mindless fun with a few buddies. What do I get? Out of 5 of us playing one will crash to desktop, another won't be able to join the party, a third will eventually fall through the ground to his death for no obvious reason and anyone left is sure to suffer from annoying tidbits of technical failures such as raining sound effects when it's clear skies and third-person shots hitting objects at point blank. What am I getting at? For a game in Early Access over 8 months and with such a talented team of staff at the helm, there is no excuse to still have players suffering from simple login issues, crash to desktops and other launch week woes. But hey, why should they bother to put in the time, money and effort to really make the Early Access a success when they've already sold thousands upon thousands of copies and were initially among the top selling games on Steam. Cash in pocket, passable product on the shelf, move on. DayZ anyone?Leave a comment
